My Students

Learning from a book works well with a few students, but the challenge is to make the subject comes alive and take root with all students. With a new community garden, students will not only learn the principles of biology and environmental science, but will see it grow right before their eyes.

I am teaching Biology and Environmental Science to 11th and 12th grade students in a high needs urban high school in New Mexico.

Most of the families in our community barely make minimum wage and most of my students qualify for free and reduced lunches. Since our school district is small and undergoing a budget crisis, there will be no funds available to teachers to buy supplies and maintain their classroom. As a new teacher in this district, I do not have a lot science equipment to work with and must either try to purchase my own materials or make due without. My students are bright and eager to learn and deserve the same opportunities that other students receive, and their academics should not suffer from a budget deficit. Help me provide the resources and technology needed to help them succeed.

My Project

With the hydroponics system, students will gain hands-on experience with basic principles of biology and chemistry as they control the amount of light and nutrients the plants receives as well as investigating other factors such as plant overcrowding, acid rain, salinity and the effects of pollution on plant growth. With these gardening and growing tools my students can work year-round on plant development experiments and determine how minerals, light, and pollution can affect the various stages of the plant's life cycle. Students will also learn about agricultural needs and how to grow their own food, as well as explore how chemistry, biology, and environmental sciences relate to one another in a real life context.

With your support you will make it possible for almost 300 students to conduct scientifically sound research on plant growth and development in their biology, environmental.

You will also provide our science department versatile tools and equipment that they can use with their students for years to come.
