My Students

Many people have heard that a parent is a child's best teacher. This is a completely true statement. However, parents need tools in order to be their child's teacher. This project can provide those very tools needed in order to give students the at-home support they need to succeed in the classroom.

I teach an AM and PM kindergarten class in an urban public school.

We have a wonderful diversity of students in our community. Our school is located in a "rough" neighborhood but our students work hard to achieve. My students are eager and passionate dreamers. We have a wonderful sense of community in our classroom and we go out of our way to leave "heart prints" (kind gestures).

My Project

In order to connect parents and teachers onto the same team we need resources to provide parents. The number one question I get from parents is, "What should I be doing at home?" These learning backpacks will answer that very question. The backpacks contain books, games, and other hands-on activities for parents and students to complete together. This project will encourage parents to make time for school related activities. This will send a powerful message to students that their family values education. Additionally, students will be excited to share with their parents which backpack they got to check-out. Sparking interest and excitement between parents and students sets a foundation for education. It will open the doors for communication and provide families with ideas of how to support their student's learning.

These learning backpacks will have a large impact not only on the students in my class, but on the entire community.

Encouraging parents to make time at home for their students will send the message to all of the children in the home that school is important. Students who value school will be invested in their education. This project will bridge the gap between home and school and ensure both the family and the teacher are working on the same team.
