Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

We are having the time of our lives, learning new African-Caribbean drum patterns together in music class. However, it is so hard for those who must watch and wait their turn. Having enough drums for everyone would move us along faster, and allow everyone to be a part of the learning together.

My elementary school is in an urban neighborhood, in the midst of an agricultural community, with no resources to purchase needed instruments for classroom drumming circles.

Our migrant population is at 31%, and we are a 98% free-reduced lunch program school. I have attempted to secure funds in order to provide instruments for each student, however during these tough economic times, our community just does not have the resources to continue their support.

My Project

Drum circles are one way in which I can strengthen and connect my students, giving them a place to contribute, belong, and support one another in a "community" setting. There is also something therapeutic about drumming that seems to unify and bond students despite their social and cultural differences. I have attended workshops and classes, and have secured many resources in which we use, but I don't have enough drums for each student in the class yet. Your help would provide all students within one class, an instrument to begin their "hands-on" experiences at the same time instead of having to sit patiently while others try it out within our limited 30 minute sessions.

As we approach new learning in music class, I use Lou Holtz's words to remind students what they are capable of achieving.

. .it is up to them. "Ability is what you're capable of doing. Motivation determines what you do. Attitude determines how well you do it." With this kind of eagerness and determination I know they will achieve new levels of musicianship, they simply need an instrument to practice on, instead of waiting in the wings for their turn.
