My Students

Do you remember the first time you picked up a book and fell in love with reading? My students have not yet experienced the love of reading. I feel that a fun reading library would encourage them to kick back and read a good book. They might even fall in love with reading!!

I teach at a high poverty school.

Many kids start kindergarten never owning their own book. Our school starts at the bottom and tries to create a love of reading in our students. Many times I send home my personal books so that students have extra books to read. Often these books do not come back to school. I spend at least three hundred dollars a year of my own money replacing books or giving books as gifts to my students. I desperately want my kids and the kids at my school to love to read. I have also found a program that sponsors preschoolers in our community. This programs sends preschoolers one book a month from birth to age five. I am trying to help change the community one child and one book at a time.

My Project

I plan to use the rug and the kids sofa to create a new reading area in my classroom. My kids do not have anywhere in the room to go read that is conducive to reading. We have cold tile floors. Often times children choose to stay in their chairs instead of going to the floor to read. I feel that students should be able to move around the room and curl up with a good book. The rug and sofa will allow my students to find a nice warm place to sit. This summer I plan to sew homemade pillows to also go in the new reading library.

I desperately desire my kids and the kids at my school to love to read.

If students could find a fun place to sit down to read they could then fall in love with reading. They would be excited to go to reading library.
