Both of these books will allow the students to laugh and learn about the use of vocabulary in the english language. I have a group of third graders that go to a school that has an extended school day (8:00 - 4:00) and an extended school year (1 week longer). We have the Success for All reading program where the students have reading for 1.5 hours a day. The students also learn content while they learn German. My Project: My students need A Year Down Yonder and A Long Way from Chicago by Richard Peck to complete a vocabulary unit in reading. The students will be able to learn and laugh at the humor that the author conveys through the characters in both books. The students will be able complete a character study on the main character, Grandma Dowdel, that they will be able to compare to the "characters" in their own lives. I usually read these books aloud to the students. These books will allow me to teach the book in a more in-depth manner. To be able to hold the book in their hand and to study a book like this will make the characters come alive and to really be able to make mind movies of what they are reading. hide» My students need 30 copies each of "A Year Down Yonder" and "A Long Way from Chicago" by Richard Peck. details»
