My Students

I realized the power of teaching literacy through the use of music when a student of mine confessed he knew the answer to a grammar question because he had heard it mentioned in the lyrics in one of our classroom songs.

Our school is a public middle school in Iowa.

On a daily basis, we service 300 seventh grade students. The demographics of our student body include: Caucasian, African-American, Bosnian, Hispanic, along with a small Asian population. Our students exhibit a desire to make a difference in the world. We foster this desire by asking students to research a non-profit organization that has truly impacted their lives.

My Project

A class set of headphones will benefit our classrooms on many levels. First and foremost, students will retain more information because their engagement level will be heightened. Some uses for the headphones include: viewing online videos while conducting research; creating talking avatars to explain grammar concepts; engaging in free writing while listening to music; and embedding music in multi-media presentations.

Our students were born into a digital age that is changing by the minute.

It is imperative that our students have access to the technologies they will be using in their future jobs. It is also essential that students see themselves as members of a global society. We believe that a classroom set of headphones will help students utilize the full potential of the Internet and help students retain information by using the senses.

This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
