My Students

Do you remember when you had to pay for your purchases with real money and use only an analog clock? My students need practice using actual money and clocks to master their basic skills. Many of them do not have books at home. The Weekly Readers could open the door to a new world for my kids.

My students are from a small rural area.

The students I serve are third graders that love to learn but come from struggling families. Economics have hit hard and many go without the necessary tools to learn. We are a small school that is working double time to give the kids everything we can in the form of learning opportunities. They are great kids that would take good care of the resources I am requesting.

My Project

The Weekly Readers I am requesting would be something the students could put their name on and own. It seems so small but to a child that does not own a book it means the world. They love to read about the world and this is a resource that would allow them to take the newspapers home and build their own little library. Our children are growing up in a world of credit cards and digital clocks. Their parents do not pay for purchases with cash so the kids are not developing those money skills that we all grew up with. In order to count money and master the necessary standards we need play money to work with. We are also surrounded with digital clocks. In order to teach children about elapse time they need to hold the clock and move the hands forward an hour or back two. By doing so they gain an understanding of how time progresses. The clocks and play money would help me provide a deeper understanding of the concepts.

I feel strongly about the importance of this project.

My students work very hard and I want to do everything I can to help them be ready for fourth grade. In order to help them master their reading and math goals I would love the ability to provide them opportunities to work with money and clocks in math and hold those Weekly Readers and enjoy them in class and at home in their own libraries. Thank you for considering this project. You will make a difference in the life of a child.
