My Students

The greatest challenge my students face in creating meaningful intellectual projects is the lack of technological equipment. As the world "changes" daily via technology-our students at Technology High need to be able to adapt just to maintain and stay at pace with the transitional world.

Our students live in a high poverty urban setting and a attend a magnet high school.

Seventy percent of our student population rely on public assistance. They are creative and love to express themselves while integrating research, art and technology. Our students are college bound and are seeking careers in engineering, web design, robotics and science. Some may be the first to attend college and for some the first to graduate high school in their families.

My Project

We are seeking a flip video camcorder, LCD TV and stand to create a Video Recording Center where students can create and play short videos of their projects. As an educator I would like to have our students "think outside the box" and create research papers via short videos. When students are given projects that motivate them, they develop more interest, value the process and their education. The use of media production, such as creating video projects using the flip video cam will assist the students in using the research task, learn to synthesize information and develop an understanding of topics. Students will become more motivated to employ information literacy skills, higher order thinking skills and synthesize information in their research projects, while using the flip video technology. The research assignments will give students purpose while promoting an understanding of the thinking process, use problem solving skills and technology skills.

Why is this project so important?

This is the age of twittering, texting and video conferences. Our students can no longer relate to just paper and pen, we need to create vehicles for our students that integrate 21st century literacy skills so they become effective users of information. Media literacy projects integrate information skills that students are required to succeed in college and to become contributors to the learning community and contributors in a democratic society.
