Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

How can one truly understand the impact of Malcolm X without hearing his voice? How can a student approach the depth of Sandra Cisneros' writing without hearing her speak of it? One can't. Students learn from technology and media constantly outside of school, so I must bring it to the classroom.

My students are energetic, positive, outgoing teenagers.

The majority of my students are Hispanic, many from immigrant families from Mexico, but I have a highly diverse mix that includes kids who are white and African American, as well a significant number of refugee students from parts of Africa and the Middle East. My school is considered high poverty, with 80% of students qualifying for free or reduced lunch. Despite the stereotypical "odds against them," I have found the majority of my students to be optimistic and light-hearted. While many have very serious problems outside of school, I work hard to create a positive and open classroom environment, and the kids respond throughout time and serve to enrich my life certainly as much as I enrich theirs. At times they fall, but often they amaze me with major accomplishments such as winning a state basketball championship, or smaller things like showing genuine care and respect toward students who are often labeled as outcasts.

My Project

This past year, I was blessed to receive a Smartboard installed in my classroom. This is basically an interactive "chalkboard" that performs all functions my computer can do. As I have gotten better with it, I have come to realize that I need more technology to maximize what I can do with it for my students. The computer speakers will allow me to show audio/video clips from websites like Teacher Tube to bring lessons to life, and in a format that grabs kids' attention. Media is how kids obtain so much knowledge in their real-world, so it makes perfect sense to accommodate their learning in a way that interests them and focuses them! Also, the wireless mouse adds an aspect to my teaching where I can show Power Point or slides using the Smart Board program, and be able to walk the room instead of being forced to stand in the front next to the board. This allows me to ensure that students stay focused by using proximity, and I can check their progress through the lesson more readily.

Please help my students experience a classroom that has been brought to life!

Video and audio are two forms of media that meet my students' needs. It opens an avenue of access to their brains that they enjoy and are interested in. When teaching meets the students' needs, they learn and thus have a much higher chance for success! My request will help me become a better teacher for my students, and in turn they will become more engaged as their different learning styles are met. Thank you!!
