Here is How to Get Me Reading

My students need 12 sets of Diary of a Wimpy Kid Series.

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My classroom is limited. It is lacking high interest books. My students were overjoyed when they realized that I purchase a set of The Diary of a Wimpy kid series. They have all asked me if they could take the books home. Unfortunately due to the fact that I have only one copy they are not allowed to take the book home. I would love to give them the opportunity to take the book home.

I am a New York Teaching Fellow in my fifth year of teaching.

I teach a 4th grade special education class (multiple subjects). My classroom demographic is diverse. My students are of ages 8-11. They have been diagnosed with learning disabilities (speech/language impairment, cognitive/developmental delays, etc.) sensory impairments (visual, auditory), related health alerts (ADD/ADHD) and emotional/behavioral disorders (EBD).

My Project

There is just something about the “A Diary of a Wimpy Kid” series that has captivated my students’ attention. Even though the main character is un-cool, my students seem to be inspired by the character’s skill to stand up to bullies in the end. My students seem to be so mesmerized by the book series “Diary of a Wimpy Kid," I would like to add twelve sets of the series to my classroom library. Another reason my students like this series is because of how the author lays out the text on the page. Majority of my students suffer with ADHD/ADD and as a result struggle when it comes to reading lengthy texts which are not separated by breaks. The “Wimpy Kids Series” breaks up the texts with mini illustrations and short paragraphs.

I am requesting copies of the Diary of the Wimpy Kid Series for each of my students as a moving up to the next grade present.

Currently I have only one copy of each book in the series. My students are afraid of putting the books down because they are not sure when they will be able read it again. This is a constant struggle amongst themselves and is difficult for me to watch. Everyone wants to read the books at the same time. Though I am excited that this series has sparked their passion to read, I am also heartbroken to see them fight over books. If you fund this project it will allow me to get the books that kids, especially boys, really want into their hands. This will show kids that their needs are important and respected, especially at their classroom library. Thank you in advance for your support.
