Outdoor Classroom/Nature Trail in Former Logging Camp

My students need 16 compasses to learn orienteering skills by locating 34 stations found on an old map of an overgrown nature trail we are rehabbing near our school.

My Students

Our school is located in a former logging camp in Alaska. A map and guide of a nature trail that had been constructed by the students during the logging camp days was found. However the trail has grown over. We need orienteering skills and compasses. to rehab the former trail.

Our students live in a beautiful temperate rainforest and are keen on outdoor activities.

We live in a small town where everyone knows each other. There are only 75 students in the K-12 school. Four seniors will graduate this year! 79% of our students receive free and reduced lunch, many families depend on subsistence to provide part of their food supply for the year. Jobs are limited as the area tries to redefine its industry and natural resource use. However, the students would like to develop their survival skills and identification of local flora and fauna and food webs. By revisiting the nature trail, they have a connection to their neighbors and alumni who developed it when the town was established over 20 years ago. They also have a chance to see how the nature trail area has changed in the past 20 years.

My Project

By learning about orienteering, our adventurous students learn crucial survival and problem solving skills. With these particular compasses requested here students can learn orienteering with the "Red Fred in the Shed" strategy. The large demo compass will help with initial instruction that takes place outside. Once students have the hang of "Red Fred" they will be able to seek out the 39 stations that are located on old Nature Trail map, using the guide for clues that may or may not still be there. For example, the old stations explore lichen, salal, western hemlock, and skunk cabbage all specimens of species that could have been displaced in the past 20 years. Seeing this change will give students an opportunity to explore how food webs and ecosystems are dynamic, changing just in the time of their neighbors and their own life time.

Students often ask "why do I need to learn this?".

This orienteering/nature trail activity provides students with real life experience and relates their immediate environment to concepts they learn in school like geometry, biological classification, and history. This activity puts them on the map. With our small population size and very limited budget, these compasses could provide our students and future students with years of outdoor environmental education.
