Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

"Now I know my ABC's. Next time won't you sing with me?" Every child that comes to first grade can certainly sing this song, but do they really KNOW their ABC's? Each year we have students who come to first grade and do not know their letters and sounds.

Our school is largely Hispanic in population, with many of our families speaking only Spanish in the home.

Our socio-economic class is low to middle class and we are located in the state of Nevada. We have many special education classes in our school. We have received many awards for our inclusive schools practices, including the highest recognition two years in a row for our district.

My Project

We have an amazing group of volunteer parents who are working with our current students on mastering first grade skills. These are students who come to us only knowing a handful of letters and sounds. You would not believe the progress that they have made thanks to our incredible volunteers! While we were lucky enough to lock into volunteers who were able to come consistently, our problem was lack of materials. Funding this grant will allow for a variety of materials to use with these students who are lacking the very basics for learning to read and write.

If we are to have a future full of literate adults, we must provide interventions, additional practice, and remediation for them NOW!

It is essential that these children master the basics so that the rest of their education will not be full of stumbling blocks. Your donation can help create a better tomorrow!
