My Students

You don't break any speed records when the computers you're using in your classroom are the same age as your students! I have inherited a fleet of aging iMac and iBook machines, but with simple memory and software upgrades they are more than adequate for 90% of the work we do in class.

Students in my small town have known each other (and most of the community) as far back as they can remember.

Students come from a range of different backgrounds, both geographically and socioeconomically. Many students are learning English for the first time after having moved here from other Pacific islands, Mexico, or the mainland. Many students face serious economic hardships at home, especially with the economic downturn in the building industry. Most importantly, my students live in the most geographically isolated island chain in the world. Many have never been to the opposite side of our island, much less to Honolulu or the mainland. They even refer to directions on the island in terms of its northernmost and southernmost points ("Kohala" and "Ka'u") rather than cardinal directions. Our school is high poverty and lacks adequate technology. With no computer lab open to teachers, we are left to share 8 modern computers across 100 students.

My Project

Even our outdated computers have changed how I teach my class -- this year, students learned to use Google Docs and Moodle to write and publish all of their work online. Students shared all of their drafts with me digitally, building their computer literacy. In their end of the year survey, 98% of students felt comfortable using Google Docs on their own -- a skill they can use forever. Moodle allows students to participate in online discussions and is often found in online college classes. Students in our isolated area will ALL be required to use online learning someday -- so we better get started now! My students need memory upgrades for our eight existing computers. This will make it possible to run a more recent version of Apple OS X and use modern software. With these upgrades, students will be able to continue using the computers for research, writing, and publishing. Other projects have included video blogs with green screen video processing, audio podcasting, games in MIT's SCRATCH computer language, and photography. Each student will produce at least two of these projects in each academic quarter. Without updates, projects will be very limited.

Most people think of Hawaii as paradise, but the educational climate here has faced serious challenges in the past year.

The state cut 17 days out of the academic year in the form of furloughs. This reduced timeline makes it difficult to cover the material required in a year. Many of our students have access to the Internet, and it makes sense to continue developing our online learning. Plus our students really love technology and keep requesting more of it!
