Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I have the wonderful opportunity to spend my day with eager learners and resilient readers.
Although my students are years below grade level they challenge themselves to grow every day. These students are interested in experiencing new things and making new discoveries. However because of circumstances out of their control, they frequently miss out on enriching life experiences that provide them with important and useful background knowledge. Through books, students can experience all the discoveries and adventures they so eagerly want to go on and gain invaluable knowledge.
My Project
During independent reading time, students will peer read, read to a group of other students and/or just read on their own. Some are on carpet squares, some are on the bare floor, some remain in their desks. There just isn't any real place to get cozy and comfy with a good book.
The carpet, pillows and music will allow my students to truly appreciate the experience of reading for their own enjoyment. It will give them a space of their own where they can get lost in the pages of a good book. More importantly, these resources will help encourage those students who have yet to discover their literary niche.
The achievement gap in America is a literacy gap.
Investing students in reading at a young age will provide them with the tools they need to be self-sustaining learners. By providing students with a comfortable reading environment you are investing in their love for reading and a future of success.
