Active Programming: Developing for IPhone and IPod

My students need an iPod Touch so that they will be able to actually test out the applications that they create as part of the computer science curriculum.

My Students

Developing software requires time and testing, a development IPod would allow students to actually experience the programs and projects they develop.

My students are a mix from tenth through twelfth grade.

We have both girls and boys in the computer science class. This is a public school in a urban to semi-rural environment in Utah. They are taking their first computer science class and this will be their first experience creating software that can be used by themselves or others.

My Project

By having a development IPod for the students they will be better able to see the real world impacts and implications of continuing with computer science and software development. This will allow students to actually create software that can be shared with their community and provide for a deeper level of understanding because they can actually see the effects of sharing software with the world.

The ability for a team to create an application that can be shared with the entire school and beyond will greatly increase the sense of ownership and command of the subject.

A development IPod will allow students to share their applications with a much wider audience and further involve and increase support for computer science.
