My Students

Do you remember how you felt reciting your first poem? Did you feel a sense of accomplishment from knowing the poem by heart? Learning and writing poems enriches our vocabulary, expands and strengthens our minds, and helps develop character.

I teach English for Speakers of Other Languages at 3 different high poverty schools in South Carolina.

My students are in grades K-8. Many students are reluctant to read and write. I believe poetry is an exciting way to teach a love for both. Poetry is full of rich vocabulary. It can be funny, playful, and full of rhythm. Poetry is a form of personal, creative and unique expression that is not overwhelming in length. These reasons make poetry an ideal way to teach reading and writing to all students.

My Project

I've requested several wonderful poetry books to share with my students. Students will practice memorizing and reciting poetry in class and hopefully outside the classroom. They will learn about different types of poetry (Haiku, Tanka, etc...) and depending on their grade level, they will either write their own poems or express through drawings how they feel after hearing poems in their "Poetry Journals".

The wonderful words of poetry continue to make an impression in my life.

I believe the poetry we learn in our youth takes on new meaning as we mature. My goal is to help the reluctant writer and the "ready-to" writer become willing and eager writers through poetry.
