My Students

My students face two challenges: one is to find reading material that engages them and the second is to have reading material to read at home. Being able to receive magazines weekly for each student to read and then take home with them would solve both problems.

Our school is a Title I school that serves a low socioeconomical area.

At our school around 70% of our students receive a free or reduced lunch. We also have a lot of non English speaking students. Our parents are low middle class to low income families that have been hit hard by the economic status of our nation. Many parents are struggling to put food on the table, and providing their children with reading material to read at home is the furthest thing from their mind. When dealing with poor children the main concern of a teacher is literacy. Our goal is to get our students reading at least at their current grade level. However, to become better readers you have to read. Our students struggle with finding reading material that engages them. Another thing that would greatly help their reading skills is if they read at home. However, the majority of the students do not have appropriate reading material at home.

My Project

My students need 20 copies of the each of the following; Time Big Picture Edition grades K-1, Time News Scoop Edition 2-3 grades and Time World Report for grades 4-6.M any of my students struggle to finish reading a chapter book. However, if you put a magazine in their hands they will read it from cover to cover. This is because magazines are organized in a way that is easy to read. They have intriguing pictures, graphics and stories that peak their interest. Time for Kids is that must have magazine for children. Therefore, I am requesting 20 copies of each of the following editions, grades K-1 edition, 2-3 grade edition, and the 4-5 grade edition. I am requesting three different sets, so students on all reading levels will be able to read the magazines. Then after we have read the magazine in groups and completed activities the students will be able to take the magazine home. This will provide reading material that the students will be able to keep at home and read. Therefore, it will solve the problem of them needing reading material at their home.

A magazine, it seems so simple, but it has the power to revolutionize my students' reading!

This project is special because weekly the students will receive a new magazine that is on their reading level that has engaging content. This is every teacher’s dream! This project also impacts the student’s home life by giving them reading material that they can keep at home and share with their family. The goal is to get the family talking about literature instead of a television show.
