My Students

Have you ever been faced with a problem that you knew how to fix, but when you looked around you didn't have the proper tools to fix it? That is the situation teachers and students are in at my school. We need tools that just aren't there, so the problems we face will never go away.

My students deserve so much more than they are receiving.

These are young people of all walks of life and all manners of income and economic status. These young people love and find the best that life has to offer regardless of what life has already shown them. These are young people that love a good story. They are people that are resilient and will find a way to succeed even when the chips are stacked against them. These are also people that adore their technology in spite of the fact that they don't have much of it. My students are the future and they deserve a fighting chance.

My Project

Unfortunately, there just aren't the tools at our school to allow our students to broaden their relationship with technology and how it works in practical application. One place where children spend a great deal of time is in front of a video game console. Other kids will sit at a computer and watch You Tube videos for hours, while others may use it just for social networking on Facebook. While these are all stimulating activities, they are unsupported and can be misguided. For adults, the majority of what we read in a day comes from a computer screen; we, as adults, don't crack a newspaper anymore, we go to our computers to read. Using computers to improve literacy is the biggest advantage we have if we want our kids to be successful in the world they are soon to inherit. Get them reading by teaching them how to find what they love and what interests them. Get the computers in their hands, and I will make sure they learn to use a computer as weapon and a tool for literacy.

Fewer and fewer kids are able to find literature that is interesting to them.

With increased diagnosis of ADD and ADHD among out children, it's difficult to sit them down and get them to read a book. They need to find their literature in other places and by other means. The Internet is just such a place. Unfortunately many of my kids don't have that outlet at home, so it is the job of their school to give them the tools they need to improve literacy.
