Young Musicians Need a Place to Stand

My Students

Sharing what we learn is a priority for our new music program. African drums, recorders and guitars are our sound mosaic, and we are ready to begin a choir. Safe risers make a huge difference in our ability to stand and deliver! We can start with one section and add more as we can.

This diverse student population includes families from many cultures and a variety of languages.

Everyone comes to music class - little Pre-K classes all the way up to Grade 8. Despite the large age span, our school is small, which makes for a great family atmosphere. Parents are very involved and supportive, and the administration is fully behind our efforts to sing, dance, play and develop as artists.

My Project

Since this is our first year to have a music program, we have not really had many performances, but we have learned so much! Sharing what we've learned is the next step, and we do not have risers for our singers. Classes like to perform for each other, and of course, we plan to perform for the PTA, guests, and special occasions. This month, we visited a senior citizens' luncheon and sang both for and with the audience. This kind of sharing will be a priority for us. Music is a great connector!

Music has proved to be a lively topic among researchers as it applies to learning theory, memory, and the profound effect on the limbic system, the vestibular system, vocabulary, social development, physical development and the high order thinking required to involve oneself in an abstract medium which engages both long and short term memory, and prediction based on prior knowledge and experience.

In an age of testing, and convergent thinking, divergent and artistic thinking must be prompted.
