For the past few months I have been trying to get enough books to read with my small groups. Currently, I am hording all the books at the public library and feeling slightly unethical about it. This project will provide me with exciting leveled books for my students.
My students are a wonderfully diverse group of first graders with a passion for literacy.
They always surprise me with their insights into the literature we read. However, they live in a low-income area of Nevada and often do not have much access to literature at home.
Outside of school, their interests include drawing, painting, playing basketball, playing on the playground, dancing, and writing. They are, as a whole, very interested in Science. They really enjoyed the "Sink or Float" lesson we had this year and they love watching Planet Earth!
My Project
The books that I chose are at a variety of reading levels and will provide my students with a plethora of books to choose from. Many are stories that teach lessons about History, life, or Science. For example, "Frog and Toad" teaches students about friendship and the Magic Tree House collection ties in a lot of Science and History.
These books will allow me to better plan my guided reading lessons. Sometimes, I make plans for the week and then have to make new ones because my books didn't come in on time from the library. Having these books will enable me to pick and choose books at the appropriate levels. This will directly benefit my students' learning.
This project will expose my students to more literature, it will help them to build their fluency, and give them books at their level.
As a result, these children will be better readers which will help them to be more successful in life.
