My Students

"Music is what life sounds like." (Eric Olson) Our students experience the sounds of life throughout their school day through musical experiences. We wish to further broaden their music appreciation by forming an African drumming performance group.

Our students attend a project-based charter school.

We have an almost 65% poverty rate and 30% special education students. All students are welcome to apply to attend our school. Our learning community includes gifted students who received As in traditional schools but were bored with the required seat time, average students who like more support and self-paced education, at-risk students, and students serving expulsion orders. Despite diversity in their lives, our students learn to develop educational ownership that engages them in the learning process and opens their minds to possibilities. Students who had been lost in the traditional school environment are experiencing success at our school.

My Project

We are requesting six African talking drums for the purpose of forming a performance education group that will play at various school and community events. Through this experience, our students will experience African history and culture through music, share this knowledge with others, and develop a life-long love of music.

We believe that music is an essential component of a well rounded education for our students.

Learning to play African drums, experiencing history and culture through music, and performing what they have learned will be a significant part of our students education that they will take with them throughout their lives.

This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
