My Students

Why don't we have the same equipment as other schools? This is a frequent question in our school. We currently have 14 graphing calculators, which are shared by 20 students in two math classrooms each block. Other subject areas like science and principals of technology borrow them leaving us short.

The students at this alternative school have multiple learning styles and multiple intelligences.

They also suffer from severe social and financial hardships. Students are sent to this school for difficulties in behavior, attendance, and academics in the traditional middle and high school settings. Documented unemployment in this area has reached more than 15%. Ninety-five percent of these students participate in the free and reduced lunch program.

My Project

We are requesting additional graphing calculators to reduce the burden of students having to share or being left without. These calculators are a requirement for the state test, so students have to know how to use them before entering the testing site. Without enough calculators, our students are at a disadvantage compared to larger schools with more equipment.

These alternative students are disadvantaged in so many areas of the community.

Due to their social and financial predicaments, they have difficulty meeting the same standards as students from other schools. Disadvantages in their education will leave these students at greater disadvantage beyond graduation. With the unemployment rate so high and rising, these students will be the ones struggling to find a job.

This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
