This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

For the past two years that I have taught my students about 3D shapes, they have struggled to fully understand them and the concepts of volume and surface area.

My students are 11 and 12 year old mathematicians in New Jersey.

They are wonderfully curious students who constantly crave a deeper understanding of the math that they are learning. Some of them struggle greatly to grasp material at a deeper level, and we have found that they are able to understand complex concepts much better with hands-on activities and visual representations of what they are learning about.

My Project

With folding 3D shapes and giant geometric solids that allow students to fill them with liquid or rice, my students will be able to physically model volume and surface area as well as grasp the properties of 3D shapes at a deeper level. Students will be able to see how 3D shapes unfold to reveal all the faces that make them up. They will also be able to make connections between volumes of different shapes by transferring liquid or rice from one shape to another. Lastly, students will be able to identify all the surfaces of a 3D shape using the models and the folding nets to help them conceptualize surface area better.

When a student is given the opportunity to learn a new concept through a concept-driven lesson, they are able to grasp the material at such a deep level that ultimately they can apply their understanding to more complex problems as well as remember what they have learned in later years.
