Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Have you ever tried giving verbal directions to someone but ended up just drawing a map? I do this every day. No matter how clearly I articulate my thoughts, my students don't get it unless I show them. Our overhead projector helps a lot, but an LCD projector could open up new possibilities.

My English 10 students attend a failing urban school.

They all receive Special Education services. Most have learning disabilities, some have emotional disabilities, and a few have both. On top of all of these challenges, their teacher retired midway through the year, and they got a passionate, energized replacement: me. In the past three months that I've been working with my students, I've pushed them harder than they ever expected, and most have made dramatic gains. More importantly to some of them, however, I have also shown them what it's like to have a teacher that actually cares. I empathize with my students' struggles. Some things I can't change - like the district's policies toward student dress code and electronic devices, or the fact that, in the first two weeks back from Spring Break, they've had five days of (district-mandated) testing and only four days of instruction. Some things I can change, however. I plan to do whatever I can to enrich their education.

My Project

An LCD projector would change the lens through which my students view school. They attend a school with old buildings: old chalkboards and cracked plaster walls adorn their classrooms. I am the only thing that can excite my students about learning, and I'm having trouble competing with all of the exciting technology that is stimulating them outside of school. As visual learners, my students crave color and pictorial representations. My one helpful resource, the overhead projector that I had to fight for in January, has a broken knob and doesn't focus well. Having an LCD projector would allow me to engage my otherwise reluctant learners with colorful presentations and photos. For example, as we read Harper Lee's To Kill a Mockingbird, pictures of the Great Depression and movie stills would supplement the text (instead of replacing it, in my students' minds, like the film would). Once I have a projector, I will work on getting an ELMO to enrich my instruction even further.

In a failing school district, students with disabilities (of which we have a disproportionate amount) are often viewed as a burden and left behind.

Many administrators and teachers view these students as incapable of high academic achievement. Too many students in Special Education have bought into that mentality themselves, but I refuse to accept it. My students learn differently than the norm and have suffered because their needs have not been accommodated. Please help me put an end to this.
