My Students

Save our plants! Plants and the environment are important issues to our students, but we are not sure what conditions really affect our gardens and crops. How does planting a garden help the environment? How will we know what actions will help or hurt? How do I start a garden? We want to find out

My students are the smartest, most amazing students in the world!

These students are a group of 7th graders that are learning about the world through scientific investigations. They live in a rural area where the majority of students are living in low income homes. But these students don't let their economic levels deter their dreams! Many of the students are working to go to college and pursue excellent careers to make life better from themselves, and those that share the world with them.

My Project

These materials will help our students learn about the environment using a fun, hands-on approach. We live in an area where farming is a major economic activity and we are lucky because many families have room to plant their own gardens, but many students don't know how to go about starting a family garden. Students will learn how to design experiments related to environmental issues, in this case soil pollution and plants. They will record observations and document learning in a science journal. Students will be able to identify the factors that affect plant growth relating to pollution, depending on the group's experimental design. Students will be able to test fertilizers, acid rain, salt from roadways, soil type, the possibilities are almost endless. After the experiment students will have a knowledge needed to start a garden of their own. They will be able to tend to their own gardens and share their knowledge of the environment and plants with family members and friends.

This unit and the materials provided will increase student knowledge of the environment and plants.

They will understand that the actions of people can affect plant growth and crop quality in both negative and positive ways. Students will be able to take this knowledge on into life as they become more aware of environmental impacts and personal choices.
