This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

What was your favorite board game as a child? My students want to play, and they will learn at the same time.

I am the classroom teacher, along with 3 paraprofessionals, in a room of 6 special needs children diagnosed with autism.

My students are between the ages of 8 and 10. They communicate through a combination of words, gestures, sign language, and even a voice-output device. The only issue is that they so rarely communicate with each other!

My Project

Social skills deficits are one of the defining characteristics of autism spectrum disorders. My students struggle to communicate with each other. They prefer to play side by side, instead of with each other. They rarely pay attention to each other, take turns, or interact. A collection of board games will let my students learn while they play! They will learn to follow rules, speak to each other, take turns, and have fun along the way.

Your donation will improve the lives of 6 very special kids with autism.

Playing board games will allow my students to build a very important set of skills that will serve them for the rest of their lives, and they are much more likely to learn when they are having fun. A donation to this project will allow my students to learn important skills now that will prepare them for a lifetime of social success.
