Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students face challenges daily. From economic hardships to family instability. Despite the challenges, they come to school every day and give me their best with a smile on their face.

I teach in a Title I school in Texas.

Most of the students are minority students on free or reduced lunch. Most of my students are first generation Americans. Their parents want the best for their children, but often have to work very long hours just to meet the basic needs of the family. I feel that I have become their surrogate mother for the 8 hours that I have them. I have been fortunate to have my same class for 2 years in a row. I was their 4th grade teacher and moved up with them to 5th grade. We have really forged an unbreakable bond during these 2 years. I will be sad to see them go on to middle school, but am confident that I have given them a good foundation that will serve them as they move to the next stage in their educational journey.

My Project

These books are a great resource not only for the students, but for the parents as well. They are very easy to read and in simple language. We have the resource "Math to Know" for grade 5, but we only have about 6 books for a class of 24. I use them in my small group instruction and let the kids take them home as a homework helper resource. We have to rotate them and take turns since we do not have enough for everyone. The kids asked me where they could buy them and we looked them up on the website. When the kids (and I) saw how much they were, they were disheartened because they knew their parents would never be able to buy them their own book. They would be so grateful to have a book of their own that would help them as they go to middle school. They would be able to use them as a resource to help them with their Math. Math is one of the subjects that we need to level the playing field for minority students.

It will put books in the hands of students that otherwise would not be able to afford them.

They will be able to have their own personal handbook to look to when they have a Math question or need clarification of a concept. A lot of times these kids don't have anyone at home to help them with their homework or anyone with the ability or education to help them. These books will give that to them.
