My Students

A few years ago, I donated a box of books to our school library. These included AP suggested reading titles. Today, none of them remain. Book theft is something I loathe, but I certainly see why it happens. Students need only to find the right book to fall in love with reading.

As are most districts, we are currently financially strapped, unable to fully fund AP.

Our school is comprised of lower income students, receiving free and reduced lunch. Most work full time jobs to help out their families and pay for their own clothing and food. Unlike the stereotype, my students want to learn. I try to foster a community of learners and love of books. A few of my students seek current books, but most do not have the resources to do so. They do not always have transportation or time to go to the public library and our school library does not have the funding to keep current titles on the shelves. Our student body is diverse. My own classes range from African-Americans to Hispanics, Asians to Bengalis, Iraqis to Indians, and Gypsies to Bosnians, just to name a few. My current students have lived all over the globe and it's not uncommon to hear them speaking other languages in the classroom. I am also a student to their ways and customs. It's a fabulous place to work

My Project

Many schools across the country read The Tipping Point in AP English Language. It's an engaging, current read. Students will learn two things: how to analyze and scrutinize a persuasive argument and how to apply concepts to make a difference in the world. Gladwell's three key ideas, The Law of the Few, where key types of individuals such as mavens are chiefly responsible for propagating ideas, products, and tastes throughout communities, The Stickiness Factor, where ideas spread more quickly when their content is remarkable, making it “stick” in your mind, and The Power of Context, where the environment in which changes are introduced can impede or assist the spreading of new ideas, leading to “tipping points” for change will hopefully engage my students the way it has for kids all over the country.

Perhaps the full title, The Tipping Point: How Little Things Can Make a Big Difference, speaks volumes.

Gladwell's assertion is that small changes can make all the difference. These books are meant to broaden their horizons, inspire, and force our young minds to think.
