Calculating Financial Literacy for Students

My Students

Our school district is located in a rural area that has been hit especially hard by the economic crisis. Over half of the students in our school qualify for food assistance and many families are without work. These examples demonstrate an urgent need to teach financial literacy to my students.

I am asking for graphing calculators to help my students master basic personal finance skills that will impact them for life.

The students will use the calculators as a tool to learn about important topics such as income, money management, credit and debt, as well as saving and investing. Because the calculators integrate with existing technology, the screens can be projected allowing all learning modalities to be engaged.

My Project

The calculators will allow students to solve hands-on activities and real world projects in spending wisely, maintaining good credit and taking out safe and reasonable loans as well as investing. The handheld calculators have spreadsheet capabilities, a variety of quick graphs and a financial solver, all of which may be displayed on one screen. This will enable the students to receive immediate feedback in how a financial scenario can change by altering the variables, consequently helping them in making responsible, educated, financial decisions. Although it is today's students who will pay for yesterday's poor choices, the district is not able to provide these materials that will help this population learn financial literacy. Decreases in funding have become a barrier to teaching students how to avoid the mistakes that are seen in today's economy.

The students today face more financial choices than any previous generation.

They need the calculators that will make the abstract concepts more concrete therefore simplifying the concepts of economics and business. Helping to fund my project will allow my students to learn 21st century mathematical skills and economic knowledge while providing them with lifelong opportunities for personal and professional success.
