Budding Biographers In Need of Women of Distinction Books

My students need over 66 books about various Women of Distinction for our Biography Unit.

My Students

We want to study the many footprints women have left in our world. To do so, we need a variety of text informing students of the extraordinary contributions made by women throughout history.

My classroom is full of readers.

They just LOVE to read. If they could, they could read all day. But alas! Other subjects must be studied! My students are very inquisitive about the world. They bring so many questions and insights to classroom discussions, there's always a struggle with making sure we fit everything we need in our day. I teach in an urban city public elementary school. 58% of our school student body qualifies for the free/reduced school lunch program. My classroom is very diverse with students representing a variety of ethnic backgrounds. Our classroom community is very reflective of the surrounding school neighborhood community.

My Project

Having a vast selection of non-fiction women biographies will inform the classroom about women's contributions to our world. The collection of books will also inspire the girls in my class to see that they can make a difference, they can do anything, and to not let the gender issue of "being a girl" get in the way of their dreams. With this collection we will be able to study women of distinction and how their contribution has made an impact in our world. I typically do a biography unit every year and I was inspired by a former 3rd grade teacher, who is now retired, to spend Women's History Month studying women. Her idea certainly planted a seed which has led me to these resources. Our biography project will be centered around this collection. Students will study a women of distinction, write about their achievements, and present it to the class.

The women I have found biographies are not only inspiring, but are from diverse areas of study; math, science, literature, politics, social justice, and civil rights.

My goal is for students to see a piece of themselves in these women and to work hard toward their dreams.
