Celebrate Black Teachers and Students
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Do you remember being read to as a child by one of your parents? Sadly, many of my students do not share these wonderful memories. To help compensate, I try to read at least three books a day to my students.
I teach 5 year-old Kindergarten in rural South Carolina. My students are bright and inquisitive. We are a Title One school with 93% of Kindergarten students receiving free/reduced lunch. Our school was featured on South Carolina's ETV's "Corridor of Shame." All of our funds for this school year have been frozen.
My Project
Our school has one set of the "Sound Box' books. With six kindergarten teachers and three Pre-K teachers trying to check them out, it is almost impossible to get the book I need. These books are great for introducing letters and sounds. Having a set in our building would be wonderful. All six of us share books every day. We would always have access to the book we need.
Reading aloud to my students is an important part of every school day. Your support of this project will benefit my class and the other five kindergarten classes at my school. This book set will help students for many years to come.
