My Students

I love my job. I love my students. I want to give them every opportunity possible for success. To me success is not a letter grade, but rather the development of an individual, striving to reach their full potential in this world. A world, that demands a knowledge and application of technology.

My elementary school l is one of six elementary schools in our New Jersey district.

My school is a Title I school that holds grades K-6, the district elementary English as a Second Language Program, the district elementary Behavior Disorder Classroom, and has The Language Learning Disabled 4-6 classroom. Each grade level has two current sections and kindergarten is divided into two, half-day sessions. There is an average class size of 20.6 students. In addition, 14% of the student population has IEP’s. My school is greatly lacking in technology. After many years with a computer lab of only eight computers, we finally have one with twenty. This was only possible because classroom computers were given up to balance network capabilities. While twenty computers have enhanced the ability to enter into more technologically based explorations, this number is still not sufficient for most classes.

My Project

A Mimio Interactive would help enhance the level of education and global connection in our school. Why I love a Mimio is because it is collaborative! It can be passed around the school and utilized by multiple classrooms. Learning will become more interactive and lively. With all the terrifying budget cuts in the state of New Jersey, having a Mimio would motivate both the students and staff. One of my greatest challenges as a teacher is teaching math. Being one of the literary and historical persuasion, I struggle to create mathematical lessons that are both engaging and informative for my students. This hands on approach to learning with a Mimio would especially bring my Geometry Unit to life. Area, perimeter, and volume ideas could become real world connections instead of colored square tile manipulatives. Additionally, the online teacher collaboration, mimioconnect.com would let me become part of a community passionate about technology and education.

The 21st century has expanded and enlightened the field of education.

The possibilities with a marriage of education and technology are endless. Having a Mimio Interactive will only expand what the students at my school can do. Even the ability to just tap a correct answer on an Interactive Whiteboard, will engage even the most unmotivated student. That in itself is an incredible feat! These students need to feel that they are as deserving of the 21st century as any other student.
