Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
For children to grow and develop as students of science they need to learn how to question and test their hypothesis. As a 6th grade science teacher, it is my job to foster these curious young minds by designing different labs and experiments for the class.
My students are 6th graders in a low income neighborhood in New York City.
They are motivated students and love to participate in hands on projects and labs in science class. My students come to class every day excited about the new and interesting subjects that they will learn about. They enjoy testing out what they have learned in different experiments.
My Project
Labs and experiments are such a vital part of my class because the students enjoy them so much, and because it provides the students with a chance to apply what they have learned to real world situations. By participating in these laps it reinforces and expands on the knowledge that they have. Labs and experiments also allow my students to develop science inquiry skills that will help them as they move on in education.
To help my students, I need four triple beam balances. I currently only have two triple beam balances for my class of 30 students, so it is very hard for each student to learn how to use one and be able to apply this knowledge in different situations.
With four more triple beam balances I would be able to give on triple beam balance to each group of five students in my class.
The students would be able to switch off using it easily and every child would be able to have the experience of using the triple beam balance and learn the skills of how to find the mass of different objects. They would be more involved in the labs and have more hands on experience in making a hypothesis and conducting experiments.
