Translation Dictionaries From Countries Around the World

My students need 10 copies of Uzbek-English and English/Urdu dictionaries, 2 copies of Turkmen/English and 3 copies of Persian/English dictionaries to help them translate from their primary languages into English.

My Students

Uzbekistan, China, Turkmenistan, Azerbaijan, Bangladesh, India, Pakistan, Poland, Georgia, Mexico, Ecuador, Chile, Ukraine, Tibet, Honduras, Spain, Turkey, Russia, Latvia, Dominican Republic, etc. This a list of the countries of my various 9th grade students and each comes with their own language.

My school has over 3,500 students and qualifies as a Title One school with over 46% enrolled in ELL courses.

We are one of the most diverse schools in the city. Most of the students in my classes qualify for both of the above listed designations. The school is experiencing budget cuts and there are no funds to purchase dictionaries from so many distant countries. Unfortunately many of my students will have difficulty purchasing these texts on their own. There is a limited number of dictionaries in the school library for the school to share.

My Project

In order for my kids to succeed and graduate in 4 years they need to be able to take content area courses while they study English. This means that many will face an uphill battle as they struggle to learn English (one of the most complicated languages in the world to master) and the various classes they are required to take. Luckily for some we have bilingual classes in which courses are offered in Chinese and Spanish. But are we to do with students from Poland, Uzbekistan, Vietnam, and Georgia. These students can not benefit from classes taught in Thier native tongue and it pains me to see them struggle. Dictionaries that provide translation are not easy to come by, especially from countries that have only just begun to enter the United States in any real numbers. Uzbek, Tibetan, Tajik, and Turkmen dictionaries are a rarity in our school and the number of students coming from these areas and other of the more remote areas of the world are growing.

Helping me to provide dictionaries from hard to find areas will help my students acclimate to the linguistic culture of the United States.

It will help them learn the language with less difficulty and excel in their courses. It will show them that the United States public education system is the best in the world and can help every child succeed and realize the American Dream!
