In Today's News....Students ARE learning as Journalists!

My students need a camera and SD cards for photos and protective cases for the laptop and cameras we have. We also need a printer with color and black ink for our paper.

My Students

My students aspire to understand history, current events and public policy. One way to help kids understand these things in context is by having them tell a story as a student journalist. Letting students decide what should be recorded and what story should be told is an engaging way to learn.

I teach in a high poverty, high needs school district with a deficit budget.

A large percentage of my students, 88% percent, are on free or reduced lunch. I have to reach students any way I can to compete with a young persons world that is full of technology and information in a second. My students are motivated and intelligent. We have worked on mock legislation at the state capital and it has made students question what is going on in their community, their state and their country. My students need a good camera, SD cards and a good printer so they can report on events, trends and issues for our class paper. I teach my students to be student journalists for history so they learn essential skills for writing while preparing for college

My Project

As student journalists, my students will work to empower their community. Students will improve academically as student journalists when they research, record, report and form opinions on several themes we are working on this year: how to end poverty, how to reduce the rape rate in our community and how to regulate payday loans. Journalists are needed to help the public think about how public policy will be used to solve social problems. Like John Dewey believed, journalists spark debate and the best ideas bubble to the surface. Having the students complete oral interviews, collect photos and work to report all the sides of issues will bring my classroom to the highest possible level of student learning. They will construct and destruct ideas that had about they key issues and problems solve and create summaries of what they have researched. We will present our ideas at a local law school and a state conference and make suggestions for public policy.

Students will learn about the importance of the truth in reporting and how a journalist must help the citizens with the concerns and issues of today, It will teach students the discipline of verification and the perspective of sources.

Students will have a chance to think about what is interesting and relevant to people today and how their words have power. It will allow students to develop a personal conscience and look at the collective memories that make up history while teaching journalism.
