These students are critically ill and attend a children's rehabilitation school setting. Imagine being sick and not being able to tell others your wants and needs. With this device these children will be able to communicate. You are giving them the gift of speech.
These students are critically ill who have suffered through a variety of diseases such as cancer, heart transplants, traumatic brain injury, MS, etc.
They need special devices so that they may succeed in school. Often these devices are extremely expensive costing thousands of dollars. Unfortunately, at the current time we have more students who need this device and limited funds.
My Project
The iPad will serve as a tool for training students to learn how to speak though this device. It is the hope that these critically ill students will also use this device within their hospital rooms as well as in school. With this tool these students be able to communicate their wants and needs as a person. They will also be able to answer questions, read books through the reader and use the Internet like all children do. Through this device these students will hopefully become independent. They will no longer have to wait for someone to turn the page when reading. Even though they are severely disabled, with this device, they will be able to become more independent in class as well as at home. In addition to this, the students will be able to illustrate their work visually through pictures through the iPad. They will also be able to improve their basic skills through the various apps that will be used on the iPad.
Furthermore I would like to train other professionals who have disabled students with this device so that they can enable their own students to become life long, but more importantly, independent learners.
Please help these children speak.
They and their families have suffered greatly. Think for one moment not being able to communicate with the people you love. Think of not being able to show others what you know in school. These students deserve a fighting chance. Please help us teach them how to speak.
