The Gold Rush Through Asian Eyes

My students need 70 copies of the biographical historical fiction novel A Thousand Pieces of Gold which we read during the corresponding Manifest Destiny unit.

My Students

"I never knew that!" is heard all the time during the reading of A Thousand Pieces of Gold. My students are amazed to read the experiences of a young Chinese girl during the California Gold Rush. They have all heard of the 49ers and even visited the gold country, but this is something new.

Our San Francisco Bay Area public middle school is made up of students from many different backgrounds.

They represent the diversity that is reflected in California's ethnic make up. The students in my eighth grade class are 13-14 years old. They are just at the point where they can read a novel and look beyond the obvious to the underlying messages from the author.

My Project

Many of the students in our school are Asian Americans. The part their ancestors played in U.S. history is often overlooked. These students feel connected to American History for the first time when they read A Thousand Pieces of Gold. They relate to the young girl coming to gold country, persevering, and finally becoming part of a community. Students are able to relate to the Asian immigrant experience as they read the book. It is important for students to understand the discrimination that took place on the West Coast, as much as in the American South.

A Thousand Pieces of Gold has been so well-loved through the years that all our paperback copies are falling apart.

This will be the last year students will have the joy of reading the novel unless we can have your help in replacing them with new copies. I do not want to let this part of U.S. History slip away, as often happens as money becomes scarce. Please help me continue to share this unique experience with my students. Help me encourage them to see everyone as equals.
