My Students

I am a High School teacher of Fine Arts and Pre-AP Studio art. As a printmaker myself, I want to share my love of printmaking with my students. I would like to introduce them to Etching this fall, if I had an Etching press and the accompanying materials with it to print.

My students are a highly motivated group, who plan to prepare portfolios and compete for college scholarships.

Ours is a specialized arts high school, where students determine early on that the arts are an important part of their life and an important part of their curriculum. Up until now we have been doing relief based hand printing and we could take it to another level with an Etching press.

My Project

I know from past experiences that printmaking works done using an Etching press, served students well with regard to portfolio submissions. It may be the deciding factor that helps get them into the college of their choice, win that scholarship or get them the college credit for the AP class they will be taking. What it says is that the student has had diversity in their art and learning experiences. It is another medium through which they find their own unique way to express themselves. There is also more than one printmaking method that can be used on an Etching press. Along with etching, they can also do monoprints, embossing and other types of embossed relief printing.

On top of the advantages I have already mentioned that having an Etching press would create for the art student, I need to tell you that our entire school, with it's interdisciplinary curriculum, would permit all students to have the advantage of learning about the printmaking process through overlapping areas of study in academic subjects as well.
