This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Remember what it was like to be 8? You wanted to touch everything, see everything, feel everything! My 8 year old students want to do the same in their learning. How wonderful to have the ability to see in great detail things like animal parts, etc!

Our school is part of a large suburban school district in Texas.

While we are considered a suburban school district, our population is more consistent to that of an urban school district. We are a Title I school with 90% on Free and Reduced Lunch. Our current enrollment is 775 students with the majority being Hispanic. I currently have 18 students ranging in age from 8 to 9 years old.

My Project

I am requesting a document camera for my classroom. These cameras replace the old overhead projectors. They do not require transparencies to use, but instead project the actual object through the projection system already supplied in the classroom. The students in my classroom participate in many authentic learning activities in all subjects, especially math, science, reading, and writing. In order to facilitate the learning, many times I find myself demonstrating procedures, examples, etc to the students. They have to crowd around me to see the demonstrations. This leads to some students not having a good view of the content and they get frustrated. As the students work on their learning projects, they are asked or volunteer to share their experiences with the rest of the class. Again, the ability for everyone to view the project is limited. Using the document camera, the students would be able to project their projects, journal entries, examples, etc.

Today’s students do not sit in neat rows and work out of textbooks.

They are involved in authentic learning where they discover the content being studied. They are actively involved in their own learning by conducting experiments, research, collaboration, and questioning. A document camera in the classroom is a tool that will facilitate the students’ ability to investigate the curriculum. This in turn will help them get ready to be productive citizens in the future.
