Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Cinderella had a fairy godmother but my students are not so lucky. They have grand dreams of being successful after they graduate from college. But unless school provides hands-on experience, most of these at-risk children will be significantly behind their peers from other schools.

My high school students are like others anywhere else: wanting to make it on their own, wishing they were already grown up, wondering about their future.

Most of my students are at-risk. Many are of Hispanic origins, and perhaps second generation Americans. Their high school graduation will be a significant accomplishment for their entire family. Going to college, for them, is almost unworldly. Their lack of material wealth does not mean that these students hope or dream less than others; it does not mean they are less intelligent or less capable. It just means we have a few more barriers to cross to get them on a par with other students.

My Project

I am reestablishing a journalism program at a historic high school in an urban area. This urban school district is financially strapped; the last thing anyone wants to spend money on is photography equipment. I want to provide my students with equipment like anyone else might have. I have a rising senior who loves photography, plans to study it in college, and hasn't been able to hone her craft. I believe that, once these students have the opportunity, they will soar. With a camera, I will be able to unleash her potential and that of my other students.

I remember how important exploring opportunities was for me in high school.

Being able to offer my students a chance to explore their world and develop their interests--and ignite their passions--is critical. It is not an option to throw a student's intellect away.
