Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I have seventh grade students that are reading on a second grade level. With the majority of my students experiencing 3-5 years of delay in their reading ability, it is no wonder that they are struggling in Language Arts, Social Studies, Science, Math, and every other subject that involves reading.

My students are White, Black, and Latino and range in ages from 12 to 15 years of age.

A few students are very proficient readers and are excellent students that any teacher would love to have in their classroom. Most, however, are below grade level when it comes to reading ability and comprehension, which makes most of their other classes difficult as well. ALL of them really want to be good readers and want to be able to perform on grade level, even though some of them try very hard to demonstrate otherwise. Some students act out to mask the fact that the work is difficult, or that they don't understand. In my experience, this is mostly due to reading problems that aren't being addressed. My students have the unique opportunity to participate in an intensive reading program this year (and next year). For some of my students, this may be their last chance before high school to try to get caught up and close that gap in reading. These are bright students - full of potential.

My Project

With the intensive reading program, at least 1-2 years of growth in reading is/are expected when properly implemented. To do this, we must meet in small groups, according to the specific reading skills each group needs to work on. When we meet in small groups, the students need to have a white board right at their table / area to see proper spellings, patterns, rules, etc. Students groups can be working on any level from 2nd - 7th grade level work. To help students maintain dignity as they become better readers, we need a white board and listening center (students can hear properly modeled reading)to practice with no fear or stigma. The trimmer helps create cards and puzzles students need to practice their fluency, which must be individually tailored to meet each groups' needs. If we can receive these materials, the results of the program will be amplified and more students can close the gap in their ability and where they are supposed to be even further.

This project is critical to the success of my students.

Its effects will reach far beyond this school year to impact their entire lives and even our entire society. Better readers will be better students. Better students will be able to go on to be successful in high school, college, in the work place, and in life. I don't know anyone who would not want to see that become a reality for our children. Please donate these items so that I can really give as much opportunity as I can to readers.
