Help Young Lawyers Study the Skills of Persuasive Speech

My students need a Digital LCD Multimedia Projector.

My Students

My classroom is a courtroom, and my students are attorneys. We study Constitutional Law by becoming attorneys for real cases, making oral arguments before panels of judges, presenting opening and closing arguments, and examining witnesses in civil and criminal cases.

My students come from a high-poverty urban environment where for many of them drugs, violence, and incarcerated family members are fixtures of everyday life.

My students are predominantly 10th and 11th graders and are almost entirely African-American. Their neighborhood school has been sadly neglected by the school district, and students are very aware that they are not a priority for the powers that be. Nonetheless, we have some outstanding teachers and students are learning - it is plain to all of us teaching that we have the privilege of teaching some extremely bright and resilient individuals.

My Project

Having a projector in our classroom will enable students to be regularly engaged with materials in new ways and further develop their abilities to develop and present ideas in a clear and compelling manner. The skills of analysis, using logic, and building and presenting arguments are essential so that students can become better advocates for themselves and for their communities. We will be able to watch models of effective arguments and articulate delivery, which students will analyze and assess, and students will also be able to study films of their own performances and evaluate them. All of these activities complement our heavy emphasis or reading and writing to allow students to become well-versed in analysis, evaluation, and persuasion.

Literacy and expression constitutes so much of what holds families in poverty; our constitutional law class is all about students developing their skills as advocates - both for themselves and for their communities.

A projector will help students witness and evaluate models of advocacy, as well as provide them an opportunity to observe themselves and hone their skills.
