Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

One would think that my students, New York, have time and time again traversed the magical streets of Manhattan. To my shock and dismay, I quickly discovered that as far as many of my students are concerned, Manhattan is as alien a locale as is China or Germany.

In fact, for my students, most of whom grow up in low-income, single-parent households, a round-trip ticket to Manhattan is sometimes a luxury their families cannot afford.

Furthermore, while many people may believe that every youth in today's society has access to a home computer, this would be a big assumption to make. While many of my students do own computers, their systems are often outdated, dysfunctional, or unable to be operated due to the electricity being turned off in some of their homes.

My Project

As a result, since I cannot always bring my students out into the world, it is my deepest desire to bring the world to my students. With this wonderful iMac computer, I would be able to provide a stable class screen and monitor that students can utilize to see the world beyond; to access information about Ivy League Universities; upon which to discover new scholarships and internships. Having a computer in my classroom will provide students with a quick research tool and a window through which to learn about important world events.

It is incredible the number of students I teach who have rarely stepped foot into Manhattan.

Thus, with a computer in my classroom, you will be helping my students not only access the streets and sounds of Manhattan, but also those of China, Germany, their native Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico, and many such places they have only ever heard about. In today's incredible age of technology, one need not be confined to home by lack of money or resources - all that is needed is a computer screen!
