My Students

Does a picture tell a thousand words? In my classroom, they do.

My class has 27 second graders.

Our elementary school is located next to the Rocky Mountains in Colorado. My students love to take pictures. When seeing a photograph, writing ideas are generated quicker than having to remember what happened and write from that memory only.

My Project

My students need one digital camera, one 4G memory stick, and one camera carrying case. Currently, I use my cell phone or personal camera for picture taking. The camera and memory card will assist my second graders with their writing abilities. Here are some of the ways I use photographs in my classroom: * Class historian - One class member has the job of historian for a week. The historian takes pictures of anything they wish that week. * Class books - One example would be that I took a picture of each of my students with his/her favorite comfort object. The children wrote a paragraph about why the object was special to them. * Pen pal writing - We have pen pals in Australia that we trade pictures, letters, and Power Point presentations with throughout the year. We could also begin sharing movies with each other since this camera I am requesting has video capabilities! * Second grade scrapbook - Pictures are taken throughout the year and students write captions and paragraphs to go along with each picture.

Photographs evoke memories in us all.

The opportunity to have these new tools in my classroom will allow my second graders to use photographs as a way to share some of their memories through writing.
