Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Do you remember the days of the 8 track tape player? How cool was it to have that new technology in your sports car? Unfortunately, my first grade students are familiar with this antique technology also.

I teach a first grade class.

My students are from lower socioeconomic families where their primary language is not English. They come to school daily and hear me speak English all day. They go home and speak their native language in the household. This is confusing for these 6 and 7 year old children. That is why when they come to school they need to submerged in an environment rich in the English language, not only from hearing me talk to them but from a variety of resources. They need a great deal of practice in using the language daily in order to become proficient.

My Project

This listening center update will allow my students the access they so desperately need to the English language. By being able to listen to songs and stories in English they will build their vocabulary for speaking and using the language. Research shows that music is very important and can play a major role in development of a new language. This is why I am requesting a variety of learning Cd's and books on Cd's for my classroom project. By converting our current listening center to Cd's instead of cassette tapes, the students will be able to find songs and stories more quickly and efficiently. This will allow them to spend less time searching the cassette tape for the start of stories or songs and more time for listening. The students will hear English from a variety of resources presented in a variety of ways instead of just hearing me talk all day.

By supporting this project you will bring our classroom out of the dark ages and into the space age.

Our listening center is so old. It is hard and tedious to use and frankly we waste a lot of our time searching for material rather than actually listening to it. This project will allow students the chance to be more independent when it comes to using the listening center. They will have more time and easier access to an environment rich in the English language.
