Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

College-bound twenty-first century math classrooms should do more than traditional paper and pencil tasks. Traditional curriculum does not help students find meaning in math. Using technology and online learning tools in math class can extend student learning and engage them in the math concepts

I teach 10th and 11th grade Algebra 2 and in a high-needs public charter school.

A large majority of our students are low-income and minority. Over 92% of them qualify for free or reduced-priced lunch. Most of my students will be the first to go to college in their families. The primary focus of our school is to help under-served students get into and through college. Furthermore, many of my students have never had the opportunity of using much technology to learn mathematical concepts in their lower grades. Many of our low-income students do not have access to computers at home or at our school.

My Project

Taking an upper level math course is challenging to many. It can become overwhelming to students if they do not have the support or resources to understand the new content. As our class continues to learn new upper level math concepts, we become increasingly cognizant of the limitations in our classroom because we do not have the technology to support our students’ development. Furthermore, many of my students do not have computers at home. At school, we have just a small handful of working computers for our 500 students to share, which further complicates the situation. Having technology in the math classroom is imperative if we want to prepare our students to succeed in college and to be competitive in a global economy. With access to computers in the math classroom, students can access interactive learning tools that can enhance their comprehension of difficult foundational concepts. We need technology in classrooms to prepare our students for college and life.

This project will afford my low-income students the opportunity to participate in using twenty-first century tools for learning.

With the laptop they will be able to complete web-based inquiry projects. This type of project will not only prepare my students for 21st century college and life, it will also move them along to becoming independent life-long learners. Your donation will thus be a gift that keeps giving.
