My students need a dozen board games in order to learn important social skills by playing together.

My Students

Do you remember rolling the dice and taking your turn when playing traditional board games? In this day of video and computer games, students are very familiar with playing alone with an electronic and just pressing the restart button to start over. Children need opportunities playing with others.

My students attend a school in NYC with a very diverse student body.

Many are bilingual and recent immigrants from all parts of the world. Many are Special Education students with learning, social or emotional challenges. My students need opportunities to practice developing their skills in a fun and cooperative setting. Each day I have scheduled socialization groups for them to learn positive behaviors when interacting with others. They may have difficulty sharing, attending to task, following directions or accepting consequences of behaviors.

My Project

With your assistance, I will be able to provide many opportunities for my students to practice social skills and to develop character building qualities. Learning to share is one of the best benefit of playing board games. Kids learn patience waiting for their turns and manners when interacting. Children need to learn to have fun times with other children and a board game can provide the time to talk and to get along with others. There are also rules of board games. Learning rules helps the child learn to set appropriate boundaries as they take turns, share, and interact with others.

Supporting this project will have great impact on my students.

Students will be able to have positive interaction with others, practice new language skills, approach others in socially acceptable ways, and most importantly, make and keep friends.
