My Students

How do we inspire 4th graders to become readers? By providing great literature like: Sign of the Beaver, Hatchet, Bud, Not Buddy, and My Brother Sam is Dead, I can influence and enhance my students' historical knowledge and love for reading.

This year a third of my classroom students are in the Gifted and Talented program and all of my students love to read.

I do not have books that go with my Social Studies units. We are at a new intermediate school that is not a Title 1 school and does not get funds for books above and beyond the state text book, nor does our school library have these class sets for checkout.

My Project

My students' lives will be heightened by the additional information that will be read in these books. The language will broaden their understanding of how a writer expresses information and ideas and uses words. These stories will make the students' identify with time in history and explain the daily lives of characters during this time. The four class sets: Sign of the Beaver, Hatchet, Bud, Not Buddy, and My Brother Sam is Dead will be used to enhance the Social Studies units. Students will read individually and in small groups, learn vocabulary, create projects to respond to the literature such as PowerPoint presentations, brochures, time-lines, write summaries, create original book covers, create character portraits, etc. I also integrate reading and writing skills by targeting specific skills based on student needs. The book Pink and Say will be used as a read aloud that will allow students to predict, enhance listening skills, and discuss historical content and story events.

The use of these materials will allow the students to see the words and feel what the author wants to express.

It will give each child their own copy that can be read again and again with classmates and family. This will further expand the sharing that goes on in our classroom outside the walls of our school into the real world and the history that made America what is is today.
