My Students

Old time music is so exciting and interesting. Many children do not even know about old tunes that are such a part of their heritage. A love of music and the ability to play the fiddle provide such enrichment to the lives of children.

Many of the students at my elementary school come from low income families who are unable to provide any form of music instruction.

They struggle just to make ends meet. The students just love the only music instruction that they get at school-- one class each week that lasts for about 40 minutes. With all the budget cuts, we are not sure how long this will even exist. The fiddle club was started about 4 years ago to give some students the opportunity to experience the joy of playing the fiddle.

My Project

Since the fiddle club was started, it has become a big part of the school with students performing at PTO meetings and community events. Kids are humming the tunes as they walk down the hallway and tapping their feet to performances. It's been a great opportunity for many students. Currently there are 14 spaces in the club, in which each child is assigned an instrument to take home and learn to play. The club meets once weekly after school to learn fiddle tunes such as Cindy, The Girl I Left Behind Me, Old Joe Clark, and Bury Me Beneath the Willow. There is currently a long waiting list of students who are interested in joining the fiddle club but there are not enough instruments to add new students. We would like to add 4 new students for the 2010/2011 school year. These potential students have repeatedly asked to join and none of them would ever have music instruction without this program.

We hope you will consider bringing the opportunity to learn about old time music and play a fiddle into the lives of these students.

It is such a meaningful experience and your donation would help us to add 4 new student to the club. Music truly makes the world a better place.
