My Students

"Engrossing. Transcends politics and becomes the story of one little girl trying to survive." This how the Red Scarf Girl is described. Here we find a story that seemingly crosses cultures and shows students that facing struggles and having a will to survive is a must for kids everywhere.

The scholars in my class are from an urban setting and have a variety of social, cultural, and economic backgrounds.

As a school with a huge focus on international education and diversity, our scholars learn to be friends and show respect despite their differences. My scholars are learning to find commonalities within each other and work together to use those commonalities as assets rather than as hindrances.

My Project

We will be using the novel Red Scarf Girl to study propaganda techniques used in political campaigns throughout the world. They will illustrate the techniques used in the novel and show the blaring similarities regarding propaganda that they encounter in their every day lives as a citizen and as a viewer of media. We will use this novel in both Social Studies, to learn of Communism and of the people of China, and also in Language Arts to gain a more full understanding of propaganda and author's purpose.

The scholars I work with come from economic backgrounds that don't always result in success.

The scholars will use the resources donated here to reach a level of success that they haven't reached before in previous years. We will use these sources to offer a global awareness to kids who don't often see outside of their own neighborhoods.
